The Irish Cattle and Sheep Farmers’ Association has paid tribute to the Carlow farmers who have come together to support fellow farmers struggling as a result of the chronic lack of grass growth and shortage of fodder. Last Friday, (03 May 2013) a consignment of hay and straw bales was dispatched from Carlow to be distributed among some of the worst-hit farms in Leitrim and wider North West area.
The delivery was assembled at the farm of ICSA National Executive member Denis Nolan, near Nurney. Mr Nolan said, “At this stage, we all know that the situation is dire on many farms. It’s at times like this that the farming community must unite and support each other in whatever way we can. Here in Carlow, we have been able to gather surplus fodder and get it moving to a part of the country where there is absolutely none to be got. Hopefully the delivery will take some of the pressure off on farms that are really struggling.”
ICSA president Gabriel Gilmartin said, “The crisis is not over yet and we in ICSA will continue to do what we can on a day-to-day basis to support farmers in getting through it. This fodder from Carlow will be targeted at those who most need it and it will make a difference.”
