EARLY BPS APPLICATION ADVISED AMID ONGOING RURAL BROADBAND ISSUES

Apr 24, 2018 | Press Releases | 0 comments

24 APRIL 2018

ICSA rural development chairman Seamus Sherlock has reminded farmers to get their Basic Payment Scheme (BPS) applications in sooner rather than later. “The deadline of 15 May is three weeks from today and we know a significant number of farmers have yet to complete their applications through the Department of Agriculture’s online system,” he said.

Mr Sherlock said he was concerned that the roll out of rural broadband was so far behind schedule and was bound to have an impact for farmers completing applications online. “It is certainly an issue that the Department of Agriculture is placing this onus on farmers when the issue of adequate rural broadband in still not solved.”

2018 is the first year it is mandatory for all BPS applications and the Transfer of Entitlements to be submitted online.

“Approximately 16,000 farmers completed their 2017 applications manually so this will be a big change for those. However, anyone encountering difficulties should avail of the assistance on offer from the Department of Agriculture or liaise with a qualified agricultural consultant.”

CONVENING OF NFFSC MUST KICKSTART EMERGENCY RESPONSE TO WEATHER RELATED DIFFICULTIES FACING FARMERS

ICSA president Sean McNamara has said the convening of the National Fodder and Food Security Committee (NFFSC) tomorrow must kick start an emergency response to the ongoing difficulties facing farmers amidst continuing heavy rainfall. “With any hope of an early spring well and truly dashed and any fodder reserves dwindling fast it is clear this committee needs to rapidly reassess the current situation on the ground, including the extent of the fodder shortages and the impact of continued wet weather on farming operations,” he said.
