GOVERNMENT MUST GET ITS ACT TOGETHER ON TACKLING AGRICULTURAL DIESEL PRICE

Mar 9, 2022 | Latest News, Press Releases | 0 comments

ICSA president Dermot Kelleher has said that this morning’s cabinet decision to tackle escalating diesel costs by focusing only on excise duty shows that the ICSA proposal for a support payment for green diesel is now urgent.

“We strongly argued last night for a support payment for green diesel because the low rate of excise on green diesel meant there isn’t enough room to deliver a really impactful cut. The Government needs to get its act together quickly because we are rapidly heading towards the absurd situation where agricultural diesel will be as dear as auto diesel on a VAT exclusive basis. This is particularly pertinent because most agricultural contractors and larger tillage farmers are already VAT registered.”

“The Government is being hypocritical when it is expressing concern about food security and then giving farmers a kick in the teeth on fuel costs. We cannot emphasise strongly enough how much anger there will be in farming circles if there is not a proposal on the table in the next few days to help keep the price of green diesel under control.”

CONVENING OF NFFSC MUST KICKSTART EMERGENCY RESPONSE TO WEATHER RELATED DIFFICULTIES FACING FARMERS

ICSA president Sean McNamara has said the convening of the National Fodder and Food Security Committee (NFFSC) tomorrow must kick start an emergency response to the ongoing difficulties facing farmers amidst continuing heavy rainfall. “With any hope of an early spring well and truly dashed and any fodder reserves dwindling fast it is clear this committee needs to rapidly reassess the current situation on the ground, including the extent of the fodder shortages and the impact of continued wet weather on farming operations,” he said.
