 THAT’S FARMING – 14 SEPTEMBER 2016

ICSA Beef chairman, Edmond Phelan feels Turkey export will break factories grip on Irish farmers.
ICSA beef chairman Edmond Phelan has welcome the news that live export of Irish cattle to Turkey will start next week.

Phelan has said the live export will counteract factory efforts to drive down beef prices.

“At prices of up to €2.20/kg liveweight, this trade will mean factory prices for bulls are not competitive and farmers should look very carefully at their options in terms of feeding these kind of cattle.”

Turkey imported 380,000 head in 2015 the majority of which came from South America.

The immediate demand from Turkey is for younger stock mainly weanling bulls up to 12 months of age and up to 300 kgs from the suckler herd.

Ireland exported a total of 178,000 head in 2015.

Phelan concluded saying;

“ICSA wants to see more support for the live trade from the Minister because this is the only show in town to deliver badly needed relief to hard pressed cattle farmers.”
