ICSA Warns that BSE Case Must Not be Used to Drive Down Price

Jun 25, 2015 | Press Releases | 0 comments

25th June 2015

ICSA president Patrick Kent has warned that today’s confirmation of a BSE case in Louth must not be used as an excuse to drive down price.

“Farmers have seen a welcome tightening of prices in recent days, and meat processors cannot use this result, an isolated one-off case, as a stick to hammer farmers with,” he said.

“It is likely that the case will have little or no impact on Irish exports, and we don’t expect to see any impact on farmgate prices either.”

FARMERS LOSE OUT WITH LOSS OF KILDARE CHILLING TO DAWN MEATS

ICSA Beef chair Edmund Graham has called on the new Food Regulator to pay special attention to the takeover of Kildare Chilling by Dawn Meats which he said has devastating implications for competition for both beef and lamb. “Farmers have lost all faith in the CCPC which has nodded through this takeover. The reality is that a factory that many farmers depended on to sell cattle and lambs at a fair price is now under the control of one of the big two. This will not be a good outcome for farmers.”
