ICSA WELCOMES OPENING OF BADGER BIOSECURITY SCHEME

May 13, 2026 | Latest News, Press Releases

ICSA Animal Health and Welfare chair John Barron has welcomed the opening of the new On-Farm Badger Biosecurity Scheme, saying it is recognition at last that effective biosecurity measures come at a real cost to farmers. “ICSA has consistently said that good biosecurity costs money, and we welcome the fact that this scheme acknowledges that reality. Farmers are being asked to take more and more measures to reduce TB risk, so it is only right that practical financial support is made available to help them do that,” he said.

Under the scheme farmers can avail of grant aid covering 40% of approved biosecurity investments up to a maximum expenditure of €2,000 excluding VAT. The scheme covers measures such as fencing around badger setts and specially designed feed and water troughs aimed at reducing contact between badgers and cattle.

Continuing, Mr Barron said, “Measures such as fencing off badger setts and improving feed and water trough systems are sensible practical steps, but they take time and cost money to put in place. Any support that helps farmers put these protections in place is welcome and should assist in the wider effort to tackle TB.”

Mr Barron said ICSA had pushed for the application process to be kept as straightforward and practical as possible for farmers. “The important thing now is that farmers look at the scheme and see what measures could work on their farms. We would strongly encourage eligible farmers to apply.”

Applications will remain open until 31 May 2026.
