ICSA president Patrick Kent has welcomed the visit of Chinese Premier Li Keqiang and Agriculture Minister Han Changfu to Ireland.

“This visit is a welcome acknowledgement of the developing relationship between Ireland and China. The more markets we can open for Irish agricultural produce, the better for everyone,” said Mr. Kent.

“However, the bottom line is that these new markets must translate into better prices for farmers and not just lead to greater profits for processors and multinational supermarkets,” he warned.

ICSA Tillage chair Gavin Carberry has said Minister McConalogue must put money on the table if the decline in the area under tillage is to be reversed. “The tillage sector is in dire need of a significant and multi-year financial boost which must be delivered if the Department are serious about meeting the target of increasing the tillage area to 400,000ha by 2030 as part of the Climate Action Plan,” he said.
