Following the heart-breaking news of another tragedy on Irish farms, ICSA rural development chairman Seamus Sherlock has called for farmers to take more care of themselves and their loved ones while operating machinery and handling livestock.
“All farming sectors are experiencing a difficult time right now with poor prices and inclement weather conditions adding to an already stressful time”, said Mr Sherlock. “Stress and worry leads to lack of sleep and appetite and this in turn can be a factor in poor judgement and fatigue.”
Farmers should not feel alone, added Mr Sherlock, “There are plenty of helplines who offer a friendly ear and advice on financial worries and ICSA would also urge farmers to speak to family members or a friend as a problem shared is a problem halved.
We in the farming community are renowned for looking after our animals’ health and I would implore upon farmers to make their own health and safety a priority as this will go a long way in securing the future of the family farm”, he concluded.
