Shannonside farmers take part in protest at EU Commission

Jun 1, 2016 | ICSA in the Media | 0 comments

SHANNONSIDE FM – 4 May 2016

Chairman of Roscommon ICSA Ger Grehan Members of the Irish Cattle and Sheep Farmers’ Association (ICSA) from the Shannonside region have been protesting outside the EU Commission offices today due to what they describe is the potential sell-out of the EU beef farming sector in Mercosur and TTIP talks.

President Patrick Kent is slamming EU Commissioner for Trade Cecilia Malmstrom for reckless concessions and claims that the EU Commission has no democratic mandate to push for a trade deal at such a huge cost to the European beef farming sector.

ON the table is a proposed concession of a 78,000 ton tariff rate quota (TRQ) in the Mercosur talks and the possibility of a similar offer on TTIP coming after the concession of 50,000 tons to Canadian farmers under CETA.

Roscommon ICSA Chairman Ger Grehan outlines their case.

FACTORIES DIRECTING THE TRADE TO FILL THEIR OWN FEEDLOTS

ICSA Beef chair Edmund Graham has criticised factories for attempting to direct the trade by pulling prices this week in order to fill their own feedlots. “Prices being pulled this week is a disgrace as there is no real justification for it. The average GB price (England, Scotland, Wales) has increased by the equivalent of 20c/kg excluding VAT since the start of August. Meanwhile, after a few weeks of improved prices, factories are attempting to drive Irish prices to a new low for 2023. This is not acceptable,” he said.
